Viva Energy Polymers
is proud to be the sole manufacturer of polypropylene in Australia. It is one of three remaining Liquid Propylene Pool (LIPP) Reactors remaining globally from Shell Chemicals Design.
The finished product is sold to domestic and overseas customers for use in applications such as wrapping film, food containers, bank notes, rope, domestic appliances, caps and closures, fine fibres, carpets, and automotive parts. The plant also refines propane as part of the refinery grade propylene purification process. The propane is exported to refinery suppliers and other interested parties.
The Viva Energy Polymers Geelong plant manufactures up to 130,000 tons per year of polypropylene using high purity propylene feed stock at its maximum capacity. It is supplied by the Viva Energy Refinery and Qenos Botany but no longer ExxonMobil Altona refinery after it closed in 2021. The subsequent reduction of total feed has presented new challenges for the plant. Simultaneously this has also presented new opportunities for the plant to optimise processing and tailor grade slate to find value.
The plant consists of 4 main processing area:
- Distillation
- Reaction
- Powder Degassing/separation
- Extrusion
